Greetings all. This is Jonathan at Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro.
Did you know there is a Japanese holiday at the beginning of June?
It's called Tanabata, which if my memory is correct, celebrates the meeting of two stars (said to be celestial lovers).
Other than the fact that it is a big festival in Sendai, and involves the writing of wishes on colored pieces of paper that are then hung on a a bamboo tree (or a fake one, as is common).
You can see such trees outside of most Japanese elementary schools at this time of the year.
I would happily provide a picture here, but alas, I have no children to provide a good excuse to take a picture of one,
and if I were noticed taking pictures at an elementary school that I have no personal connections with, it could necessitate a conversation with the police.
It is my great pleasure to avoid such misunderstandings, so instead I provide you with this picture of the admittedly more modest Tanabata Tree we have set up in the lobby at Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro.
Here is a sample wish.
It says "I hope I win 600,000,000 yen."
All of the staff are writing wishes and tying them to the tree. Of course I was assigned to write a wish as well.
Here is what I ended up with.
It says, "I wish that we get many customers."
I am as always, a company man.
And here it is tied to the tree, to amaze people with my (probably) lousy handwriting.
If you happen to be staying with us, the tree will be up through the 7th of this month, so please write a wish and tie it to the tree! You can write it in any language you please. People have already written wishes in English.
As always, thank you for reading.
