Happy Rainy Day everyone~
I think we might have been too quick in thinking that it wouldn`t rain at all during this season as it finally seems to have all come down at once! ^^ Well it could be worse because at least on the days when it`s not rainy it gets lovely and hot instead, but sometimes, spending them in Tokyo can get a bit too hot so if your interested in maybe exploring some other areas just a bit outside of Tokyo then youu`ll definitely be rewarded with lots of greeny! For example one of the main spots to go is Mount Takao, which is only 1 hour away by train!
Standing at around 560 metres high it is not the highest mountain but it is probably one of the easiest ones to explore as, if you`re not a big mountain climber you also have a choice of riding either a cable car or a chair lift to the halfway point.
The mountain is steepest between the start and the halfway point so even once you have reached the half-way point you will have to do a small bit of hiking but, because the area is rather built up with temples it is mostly stairs making it slightly easier to climb! Once reaching the halfway point you will first walk through a small shopping area where you are able to buy souvenirs. You can also take a picture of the Mountain`s famous octopus tree! Which got it`s name because of the way it`s roots have shaped to look like those of an octopus!
From then on there will be a variety of different temples where you can buy good luck charms or choose a fortune for yourself! Even as you continue up the mountain there are many different temples to look at including the different Tengu statues which are spirits who protect the mountain.
Once reaching the summit, on a clear day you are supposed to be able to see as far as Mount Fuji, but unfortunately for me the day was a little cloudly so we weren`t able to see very far ^^;
But on the way down, seeing as I actually climbed from the bottom of the mountain to the top which was actually very tiring, I rewarded myself with a large bowl of ramen which, for an extra 200 yen, you could add a baked stick of rice and vegetables which was placed to look like the Tengu`s nose!
Or if you prefer something slightly lighter then they also offer fire roasted dango which is also completely safe for vegetarians to eat as well.
So if you feel like one day just getting out and exploring a different part of Tokyo then I would really recommend that you get your walking shoes on and have a walk around a completely different part of Tokyo and you might be surprised by what you discover!
